Dancing With Myself by Rebekah

(Dancer Margie Gillis

I recently attended the opening for an exhibition of photographer Cylla von Tiedemann's Tanzbilder (Dance Images) at the German consulate. In addition to the portraits of professional dancers, there was also a 25-minute dance piece called Piece of Mind, performed by skindivers dance company.

"Either nature or the cityscape became the stage and the dancers responded to it very spontaneously. I appreciate these immediate improvisations, as in these moments the collaborative aspect of dancers and photographer become very clear. It is satisfying when together we create a story, which is unique to a particular time and space."

"Piece of Mind was inspired by feelings of fight and violence, helplessness and the seizing of personal power. Set to an impactful, rhythmic score and lit by natural sunlight; the tension created on stage is enhanced by strong aural and visual accents.
Presented in the large, stark German consulate exhibition space overlooking the city, the space itself plays an important role. Contrasting the humanness of the piece, it offers a reminder of city life; often a lonely existence, despite being surrounded by endless lines of people."
- Hanna Kent

The exhibition "Tanzbilder" is on display at the German Consulate Toronto, 2 Bloor Street East, 25th floor until August 31.

  1. Thanks for sharing I watched piece of mind over morning coffee. The light movement and use of space was a great mix to showcase emotion through dance.
