CovEtsy: Shawn Knight by Rebekah Hakkenberg

tuneyards
Oh my gosh, it's Thursday! What happened to Wednesday? Where did it go? Well, I'm breaking from routine a little bit this week, both by posting a day late, and by profiling one artist in particular, rather than choosing etsy items based on a theme. But whatever, it's (partly) my blog, and I can do whatever the heck I want! So, I came across Shawn Knight's screenprinted collage posters recently, and I have not been able to stop thinking about them. I want then all. Not only do they look really, really cool (sorry Shawn, but they do), but they're also posters for some really fantastic bands.  I wouldn't mind if someone decided to give me one or ten for my birthday (which is next month, by the way, mark those calendars!)...

From his bio:

Aside from middle school sketches of the Grim Reaper & buxom blondes engaged in various sexual acts, Shawn Knight's first foray into the graphic arts came a couple years later in the form of high school band flyers. This was before he had access to a scanner, so imagine the excitement when he discovered the ability to print text onto transparency at Kinko's and then lay it on top of a background photo or illustration to make copies from. It looked so pro!

At Detroit's esteemed College for Creative Studies (CCS), Shawn learned his sense of craft & forward thinking from his instructors and his sense of community & competition from his colleagues. Suddenly the idea of making something "look cool" became insignificant compared to the challenge of making something "make sense." It's at this point that he developed his collage aesthetic; a way in which he attempts to minimize deception and maximize integrity in his work. He continues to strive for these ideals now, though sometimes he accidentally just makes stuff look cool and feels bad about it later.

Since graduating in 2000, Shawn has kept himself busy with a healthy balance of corporate and not-so-corporate work. Accomplishments range from co-designing an award-winning website (Weightwatchers.com) to creating the artwork for one of Rolling Stone's Top 50 Albums of 2006 (Thunderbirds Are Now!'s "Make History").

After 8 years at various agencies, Shawn currently works as a freelance designer in Berkley, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit. When not at work he can be found in the recording studio/on tour with his band Child Bite, playing with/being annoyed by his 2 dogs, or watching movies with his wife.
